What Will You Learn in This Session?
Artist Casper will guide participants through the process of creating a Surrealist composition, starting with a series of sketches based on a chosen theme. He will help you explore personal interpretations and artistic expression while teaching how to translate ideas into dreamlike, imaginative artworks.
Surrealism remains as relevant as ever, especially in today’s digital world, where imagination knows no bounds. This workshop is an opportunity to dive into this fascinating movement and bring unique surreal visions to life!
What is Surrealism?
Surrealism is an art movement that emerged 100 years ago, led by the French writer André Breton (1896–1966). Breton sought to create art that transcended logic and reason, aiming to merge dreams and reality into a higher state of existence—what he called “surreality.”
Belgium became a key hub for Surrealism, where artists embraced the strange and mysterious aspects of everyday life with a deliberate and thoughtful approach. One of the most famous Belgian Surrealists, René Magritte, painted seemingly ordinary objects in unexpected ways—such as his famous pipe that declares, “This is not a pipe,” or faceless figures obscured by apples or clouds.
The magic of Surrealist art lies in its ability to be both bizarre and captivating, pushing the viewer to see beyond the familiar while remaining instantly recognizable.
How Do You Evaluate Surrealism?
Surrealism is about assembling unexpected elements in unconventional ways—almost like creating a collage of different images that come together as a single, unified painting. It challenges perception by taking familiar objects and reinterpreting them in ways that encourage new ways of seeing.
